MCIVER'S COFFEE
Once upon a time McIver's sold tea, coffee and health foods. That seems forever ago. Over time it became clear that with the entry of supermarkets into the health and vitamin arena our customer base was shrinking and it was time to change.
Something else we noticed; our tea and coffee customers were happy. They were the people who waltzed up to the counter smiling and bought something that gave them pleasure. There was no expectation of some form of treatment or cure, simply the desire for something yum to drink.
We decided to concentrate on finding more coffees, more teas and more delicious alternatives for the caffeine challenged, and in keeping with our presence at the Victoria market, keeping the quality up and the price reasonable. It's a constant challenge and we love it.
AUSTRALIAN COFFEES
McIver's Australian grown coffees are sourced from the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland. This unpolluted area has a climate suitable for the production of some of Australia's best coffees and for those who are interested it is worth noting that Australian coffee is by default, "fair trade."
A FAIR TRADE OVERVIEW
More than 25 million people in the tropics depend on coffee farming, a crop that is the economic backbone of many countries and the second most traded commodity after oil.
A decade ago, the Rainforest Alliance and its partner groups in the Sustainable Agriculture Network demonstrated that traditional, forested coffee farms are havens for wildlife. The Rainforest Alliance ecolabel guarantees that the coffee was grown on farms that meet both social and environmental standards as verified by experienced inspectors.
These standards cover the critical social, environmental and economic issues ensuring participating farms are on the path toward true sustainability. Forests are protected, rivers, soils and wildlife conserved, workers treated with respect, paid fairly, properly equipped and given access to education and medical care.
